You are socializing with your written words and video’s on the social media web, so remember you’re communicating with your potential audience that is much, much larger and once it is on the web it is not possible to take it off.

Here are 10 steps to get you started.

1. What are you objectives?

Why are you doing it?
What do you want to get out of your social Web participation?
Do you want to build relationships with customers and fans to boost loyalty?
The answers to these questions will determine the way you approach the social media marketing on the web.

2. What are your resources?
Who is going to create your content? You or an assistant?
Who is going to maintain your social media accounts? You or an assistant or employee?
Who is going to respond to questions and be the face of your social media marketing business online? Can you or someone who works with you write well?
Who and how will video’s and pictures be created?
You need to be sure you have the necessary people in place to execute a social media marketing plan before you start.

3. Who is your audience?

Where does your target audience spend time online? Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, Blogging and article sites?
What kind of content and conversations do the audience members participate in?
What kind of information and education do they want from you?
What do they like or dislike?

Remember, you’re not just publishing marketing messages on the social web. Understanding what your audience wants and needs is important so that you can provide the kind of content they find interesting and is answering their questions and curiosity. Also remember to put your personality into it as well because that is what makes social media on the web so great.

4. What kind of amazing content are you creating?

Once you know where your audience spends time and the kind of content your audience members like, take the time to give them more of that kind of content. Remain consistent and persistent by delivering relevant and interesting content. Include them in the content by allowing comments, the Facebook “Like” button and sharing buttons.

5. Insure your efforts are integrated.

All of your efforts at social media marketing should feed off each other. Cross-promote your efforts both online and offline, and make sure your social media and traditional marketing efforts work together seamlessly. This is now being done with news media and various TV programs.

6. Create and keep a schedule of your social media marketing time.

Allocate specific times during your day to devote to social media marketing. For example, check your Facebook and Twitters at the beginning of the day. Participate by sending out Twitters and posting on Facebook, allocate an amount of time you are doing this so that you do not get caught wasting time. When you create a schedule, it’s easier to stick to it and make sure your social media marketing activities are done each day.

7. Remember the 80-20 rule.
Always spend at least 80 percent of your time on social media activities that are not self-promotional and no more than 20 percent of your time on self-promotional activities. This is so important so that you are not viewed as spamming.

8. Quality before Quantity

It can be easy to get caught up in the numbers of followers and subscribers. Remember it is better to have highly engaged, loyal followers than thousands of followers who are not engaged.

9. Enjoy the fluidness of the conversations.

Remember that once you have put it out on the social media web that your audience will now participate and thus you no longer have complete control of where it will go. This is important so that they develop an emotional attachment to you, your brand, and your business. Remember, with social media marketing apathy or invisibility is a bigger problem than negativity.

10. Keep learning and remain open.

You can never stop listening and learning. For success in social media marketing, you must show flexibility and adapt to the only thing that is constant. It is Change! Change is good because it creates new experiences.
